Was It Something I Ate?

We've probably all wondered if something we ate caused an occasional episode of digestive discomfort. Sometimes, these episodes seem to sneak up on us without warning, and sometimes we probably know when we're in for a bumpy ride based on past experience.

A Few of the Most Common Culprits:
  • Occasional Heartburn Different people have different triggers for occasional heartburn but what they do have in common is a feeling of burning, heat or pain that often starts in the upper abdomen just beneath the lower breastbone and ribs. Luckily, occasional heartburn is treatable with over the counter medications and supplements. Look for products with all natural ingredients like orange peel extract to help relieve occasional heartburn.

  • Irregularity Many of us will experience irregularity at some point in our lives. Often, this is because we don't have enough fiber in our diets. In fact, most Americans only get about half of the recommended fiber intake each day. Complementing your diet with a fiber supplement is a smart way to insure that you are getting enough fiber. Look for fiber drinks that dissolve well, and don't leave a gritty taste in the glass or convenient chewable fiber tablets that you can take with you anywhere.

  • Lactose Intolerance Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest significant amounts of lactose, the predominant sugar of milk and some other dairy products. Common symptoms include occasional nausea, cramps, bloating, gas, and loose stools. Lactose intolerance can be managed by limiting consumption of dairy products, seeking out lactose reduced products or consuming dairy products with other food to slow down the digestive process. Including supplemental enzymes in your diet can also help with lactose intolerance.

  • Upset Stomach No matter the cause, when your stomach is upset you want immediate relief. Licorice has long been known to help relieve an upset stomach by helping to stimulate the digestive systems own natural protective factors.

  • Gas and Bloating Adding certain enzymes to our digestive systems through supplementation can help aid in the digestion of fiber, proteins, carbohydrates and fats, preventing gas and bloating even before they start. To prevent gas and bloating make sure you maintain a sufficient amount of intestinal flora. Intestinal flora, or probiotics, are good bacteria that help support optimal digestive health.
