It’s funny how our need for sleep changes as we get older. As a kid, who wants to bother with sleep? Especially in the summer, when each day felt like a new adventure, and the sun stayed so much later that going to bed early seemed like a waste of time.

How different things may seem now.

Now, staying up to watch the late news might feel like a stretch. And yet, being able to get good restful sleep can still be difficult. It’s confusing.

Part of the reason may be stress and a lack of fresh air. For those of us with desk jobs, weaving around the burdens of deadlines, office politics, and traffic can tie up our minds and prevent us from relaxing enough to rest well at night.

Aside from the prescription option, what can you do to establish good sleep habits?

5 ways to get rest at night
  1. Cut the caffeine
In the afternoons, really try to keep sodas and coffee at a distance. If you’re on a regular daytime schedule, skip the caffeine after lunch. More caffeine doesn’t mean more energy. Quite the opposite. Too much caffeine can accelerate a feeling of “burn out” that just makes you jittery and unfocused, which is pretty exhausting. Plus, while the caffeine may not add to your ability to work better and faster, it can keep you just awake enough at night to prevent your mind from calming and relaxing.
Go with water instead. The “original refresher” is the best bet to staying awake, sharp, and focused for the rest of the workday.

  2. Go lighter on evening meals Keep dinner satisfying, but try not to make it too heavy, either. If possible, get out for a walk after eating to burn a few extra calories and get away from the noise and light of the television. The fresh air will provide a better calming effect than reality TV or any crime drama.

  3. Keep drinks in their place
If you enjoy a glass of wine or beer with your dinner or an after work cocktail once in a while, that”s fine. But don’t rely on them to help you relax enough to sleep at night. Like caffeine, alcohol can have a reverse effect on your body’s internal clock. You may feel like you’re moving at a slightly slower speed physically, but you may actually be more restless as you try to drift off

  4. Change clothes when you get home While business casual is the style of the day in many offices, and you may not feel uncomfortable in the least in your work duds, changing outfits is a great way to establish a feeling of “being home.” Even if you’re not planning to work in your garden, mow the lawn, or anything more physically demanding than reading a favorite novel, it’s nice—and relaxing—to draw a line between those two worlds.

  5. Try supplemental sleep support Two supplement formulas may provide the benefits you’ve been looking for. They are both formulated to help you fall asleep and stay asleep, but not feel groggy in the morning.

Need valerian-free? Try Sleep Tonight!™ stress-reducing sleep aid†
Sleep Tonight! helps calm cortisol, the “flight or fight” hormone that floods our system due to stress.

Sleep Tonight! is a non-habit forming formula that includes two blends of ingredients—one for stress reduction, stress-reducing blend with ashwagandha extract and relaxing L-theanine, and a cortisol-reducing blend with herbs that help curb the stress hormone. It also provides phosphatidylserine—a tested ingredient that has been shown to promote a positive mood and decrease feelings of stress.

Sleep Tonight is unique among sleep-supporting supplements in that it doesn’t contain valerian. That’s because for some individuals, valerian doesn’t provide restful benefits—in fact, quite the opposite.

Sleep is the real fountain of youth
Sleep is important. It allows our minds a chance to relax and our bodies a chance to repair and rebuild. Sleep keeps our immune system in tune and helps keep hormones in balance. Because of this, refreshing sleep is truly a fountain of youth.

Sleep is important to the kind of energy we have the next day Sleep shouldn’t be something we just fit into our schedules when we feel like it—we should treat sleep with the same seriousness that we try, at least, to consider healthy diets.
You don't have to make a choice between no sleep and dramatic solutions for sleep. There was probably a time, not too many years ago, when sleep wasn’t that big of a deal. These days sleep may not seem so simple.
Maybe your picture of vibrant, energetic health doesn’t usually include an image of peaceful dozing.
