Some of my customers with gout are interested in using as many as 20 capsules a day of Cherry Fruit Extract. Do you know of any health risk associated with this high dosage?
Cherry Fruit Extract is a dietary supplement that provides flavonoids that have antioxidant properties and contribute to the integrity of the capillaries, collagen structures, eyes, joints, and arteries. The recommended daily dosage is two capsules (1000 mg of a 10:1 extract) three times daily.
In general, dietary supplements are safe within a broad range of intake. However, as with many substances, a higher intake does not necessarily translate to better results, and customers are encouraged to follow dosage recommendations as given on the label for optimum safety and efficacy.
Some natural health practitioners may individualize plans of care to include dosage levels outside our recommendations; therefore, we recommend that customers work with their licensed health care practitioner if exceeding the dosage recommended for the product.
How much potassium and sodium are in Cherry Fruit Extract?
The amounts of potassium and sodium in Cherry Fruit Extract are low. The actual amounts are as follows:
Potassium 3.821 mg/capsule ~0.1% DV
Sodium 0.1936 mg/capsule ~0.008% DV
This amount is so small that federal labeling regulations do not require that these nutrients be listed on the label.
Why do you use sweet cherries in Cherry Fruit Extract rather than sour (or tart)?
Research on cherry has used both tart and sweet species of cherry. Both have shown benefits for health. In a study that looked specifically at healthy urate levels the researchers used sweet Bing cherry, which is a cultivar of Prunus avium.† In a separate study that looked at the ability of cherry and berries to balance the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response, sweet cherry showed significant activity.†
What is the equivalent of fresh cherries to Cherry Fruit Extract?
This product uses a concentrated 10 to 1 cherry fruit extract, which means that it requires 10 lbs of fresh cherries to make 1 lb of cherry fruit extract.
Does Cherry Fruit Extract have any effect on pH balance?
Cherries are a source of flavonoids, natural compounds that have many positive effects on our health. The flavonoids in Cherry Fruit Extract promote pH balance by maintaining healthy uric acid levels.† Uric acid results from the breakdown of purines, compounds found in all human tissues and in many foods. According to the American Medical Association, foods with high purine content include beer and other alcoholic beverages, anchovies, sardines in oil, fish roes, herring; and organ meats, such as liver, kidneys, and sweetbreads. Cherry Fruit Extract also has antioxidant properties to protect cells from free radical damage and compounds that support healthy capillaries, collagen structures, eyes, joints, and arteries.†
