How does DGL work?
DGL stimulates and accelerates the natural protective factors in the digestive tract, which helps relieve stomach discomfort immediately.† It’s provided in a chewable form because saliva enhances the effect of the natural compounds in DGL (the key ingredient). Clinical trials have documented the soothing effects of DGL on the stomach lining and intestines.†
Will DGL affect my blood pressure levels?
The concern about blood pressure revolves around the glycyrrhizic acid in licorice. Large amounts of licorice (>50 grams daily) have been known to cause side effects, including altering blood pressure levels. Although DGL is deglycyrrizinated licorice, a small amount of glycyrrhizic acid may remain after processing. This is less than 1% according to our Quality Assurance department. Licorice is a botanical and subject to natural variation, and this amount may fluctuate, so we don't give exact measures. The PDR for Herbal Medicines states that deglycyrrizinated licorice does not have the side effects associated with regular licorice consumption. When used according to label directions, this amount should not raise blood pressure significantly.
What types of sugars are used in DGL?
DGL contains small amounts of the simple sugar, fructose and the sugar alcohol, mannitol to enhance the flavor of the chewable tablet. The natural sugars are derived from plant sources.
Yes. The long term safety and efficacy of DGL has been documented. When taken at recommended dosages, DGL has been proven safe for long-term use without any adverse affects. Licorice has a long history of use in supporting a healthy stomach and gastrointestinal system.† It is the presence of the glycyrrhizic acid in the licorice root that is responsible for some adverse effects. With DGL, the glycyrrhizic acid is extracted, leaving only minute amounts (less than 1%), thereby eliminating the risk of adverse effects when DGL is taken at recommended dosages.
