HOW DOES IT WORK?
Vitamin B12 has the largest and most complex chemical structure of all the vitamins. While the human body has the capability to store several years' worth of vitamin B12, it can be poorly absorbed.¹ Vitamin B12 is found naturally in foods with animal origins, including fish, beef, poultry, eggs, and milk products. During digestion, hydrochloric acid in the stomach releases vitamin B12 from the protein in the food to combine with intrinsic factor (IF), a glycoprotein made in the stomach walls, for absorption by the intestinal tract.² A common medical myth about vitamin B12 is that it cannot be absorbed orally or without intrinsic factor. The difficulty in absorbing vitamin B12 when IF is not available does not make oral replacement impossible; the dose just needs to be higher.³
Spirulina is a blue-green algae found in warm-water alkaline lakes. It has been consumed for thousands of years by Mexican (Aztecs, Mayans), African, and Asian peoples. Spirulina contains protein, amino acids, phycocyanin, chlorophyll, and vitamin E; it has more beta-carotene than carrots and is a source of vitamin B12 and its analogs.^4,5,6

Vitamin B12 Clinical Studies
Vitamin B12 is needed for several physiologic processes.^† Clinical studies of vitamin B12 supplements have demonstrated its importance in healthy pregnancies, cognitive processes, maintenance of bone density, oxidative stress prevention, and healthy myelin, the protein sheath that covers nervous system tissue.^†7 To determine the effect of vitamin B12 in supporting healthy energy levels, a placebo controlled, double blind study recruited 138 patients. Half were randomized to receive vitamin B12 twice daily; the other half received matching placebo tablets. Energy levels were determined with the GNDS (Guy's Neurological Disability Scale), the Chalder fatigue scale, and other research measurement tools. Analysis of covariance suggested that the treatment group had better outcomes.^† They improved by two GNDS points after two weeks and continued to have a significant improvement of 0.6 GNDS points every week onwards.^† The placebo group had no significant change in their GNDS scores.⁸
