Dietary fiber exists in two forms. Research has also demonstrated that L. acidophilus can reduce occasional abdominal distress by supporting healthy expression of mu-opioid and cannabinoid receptors in intestinal epithelial cells.†18
Probiotic Protection PredictEase combines two acid-resistant probiotic bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis, with melatonin and a protective fiber blend. STEP 3: RESTORE Intestinal Wellness & Reduce Occasional Abdominal Distress† Melatonin (5-methoxy-N-acetyltryptamine) is a hormone found in all living organisms. It is produced by the pineal gland, located in the center of the brain, and also by the eye's retina and lens, and the gastrointestinal system. Melatonin has been referred to as the “hormone of darkness” because production occurs during periods of darkness, but is inhibited by light. The secretion of melatonin peaks in the middle of the night, and gradually falls during the second half of the night. 20
Supplemental melatonin has been safely used to improve sleep quality by helping to re-establish a healthy circadian rhythm and day-night schedule, allowing the body adequate time to rebuild and restore function.† It has also been studied for its antioxidant and immune-enhancing properties and for its involvement in the regulation of gastrointestinal motility (peristalsis).†20
Clinical research has shown that melatonin can dramatically decrease occasional abdominal discomfort.† One placebo-controlled trial involving 40 individuals, suffering occasional sleeplessness, examined the benefits of melatonin (3 mg) on bowel and sleep habits.† After two weeks of supplementation, those taking melatonin had greatly reduced abdominal distress when compared to placebo.† Individuals in the melatonin group experienced more than three times the benefit.†21
Another study included 18 individuals (aged 18 to 65 years) who were randomly assigned to receive either 3 mg of melatonin or placebo at bedtime for 8 weeks. Participants were assessed both objectively (laboratory tests) and subjectively (quality of life questionnaires) throughout the trial and at 16, 24, and 48 weeks following study completion. Compared to the placebo group, individuals taking melatonin experienced up to 3.5 times more improvement in gastrointestinal function and digestive comfort.† Furthermore, quality of life in the melatonin group was nearly three times that of the placebo group.†22

Clinical Evidence When used in combination, the ingredients found in PredictEase intestinal balancing system have been shown to provide relief.† A randomized, single-blind, three phase study involving 20 volunteers found that a similar combination of fiber, probiotics, and melatonin, quickly restored and helped maintain healthy digestive function.†23
Phase I of the trial was designed to find the optimal dosage of melatonin. Participants were randomized to receive either 200 mcg, 500 mcg, or 1 mg of melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime. After one week, subjects were asked to complete a subjective questionnaire detailing the sleep benefits following supplementation.
Based on the findings of the first study phase, phases II and III were designed to assess the benefits of the proprietary fiber blend, a combination of probiotics, and 1.1. mg of melatonin. A second and third questionnaire was completed by the study participants after two weeks (II) and four weeks (III) of supplementation, respectively.
