So there you are…coasting through your 20s…into your 30s thinking of all that crazy talk about menopause as about a hundred years away and definitely not on your radar screen. And, then one day, ZING…you are now part of the “in-crowd.”

Here’s this thing you’ve known about all of your adult life and as you approach it you realize, you don’t really know that much about it! That can cause a little Meno-Insanity!

So, let’s take care of that right now. Here are some basics that you probably know about, but can’t quite put your finger on the exact definition.

Perimenopause
This is a relatively new term to describe the 10-15 years before your period completely stops. (Medically they would say “menses” but who talks like that? We’ll just say period!) Women in their late 30s, 40s and early 50s move in and out of this time by experiencing things like irregular periods, heavy bleeding, hot flashes, mood swings, occasional sleeplessness, vaginal changes and that’s just some of the lovely things we get to “experience!”  Once called pre-menopause, these days it’s perimenopause. Stay tuned - it could change again!

Many women also refer to this time, along with menopause as just “menopause” …because it does become very cumbersome to say perimenopause, especially if you have to explain it.

That brings us to:

Menopause
This is a very short definition, yet most women don’t realize this is actually what menopause is; the absence of having a period for 12 consecutive months.

That’s it.

During perimenopause you might not have a period for four or five months and think you are in menopause, but technically, until it’s been a full 12 months…you are not there yet.

While all of what we just call menopause can find a woman anywhere from her 30s to her 60s, the average age is around 52. At this age, many women are working crazy hours, taking care of a family…sometimes children and parents…and burning the candle at both ends with little time to themselves.
